Where to look for Fossils at Abbey Wood?

(Collecting on the foreshore)
(Sieving for finds) - 2000

Abbey Wood is the most fossiliferous location in London. Although it is possible for anyone visiting the area to pick up a few finds (probably sharks teeth), fossil hunting is mostly done through organised parties such as the TRG. The TRG has annual trips to Abbey Wood, hiring shutters and digging into the shell bed. Everybody has to follow certain guidelines involving sieve mesh sizes and finds. This is a very important location and therefore all major finds are required to be handed in to the museum. A tanker of water for wet sieving is provided on-site. The most common finds are shark teeth, hundreds of which can be found in one trip.

It it recommended to take a basin which can be filled with water provided onsite, then take two-grades of sieves for sieving sediment.
