(Digging into the Blackheath Beds) - 2000
The shell beds of Abbey Wood are extremely fossilferous. The beds are the Lessness Shell Bed from the Blackheath Beds (part of the Palaeogene age). Here, massive pebble beds with disturbed bedding grading into pebbly soil layers, are above Buff Sand, containing scattered shells and pebbles. Below this, an iron pan is present, with white sand beneath. There are patches of sandy, pebble coquina at the site.
